Giant Trees in Lammertal Virgin Forest

Trees as big as apartment buildings. A family hike that couldn’t possibly be more beautiful. An excursion to Lammertal Virgin Forest is an absolute feast for the eyes. No wonder, considering that this particular hiking area is home to the tallest trees in Austria. A theme path leads you through the heart of this 10-hectare nature reserve. The highlight of this family hike is the 48 meters-high “Lammertal Sentinel” – a fir tree that is around 300 years old.
Why do the trees in Tennengau grow to be so big and magnificent? Well, there are actually several reasons: the favorable mountainside setting in St. Martin im Tennengebirge, the climate and the outstanding soil conditions in Lammertal. And last but not least, time: Because needless to say, it takes dozens upon dozens of years for the trees to grow so incredibly tall.
You have two options if you want to take a hike through the Lammertal Virgin Forest in St. Martin:
For this hike, I recommend you wear sturdy shoes and good hiking clothes. After your tour through the Lammertal Virgin Forest, you will have definitely earned a break for refreshments. Why not enjoy that break at the Spiessalm, where they will treat you to homemade products and cheese specialties from the Tennengau region.
Make use of public transportation. With the Tennengau-Ticket (in combination with a valid TennengauPLUS-Card), you get to ride the buses & trains in Tennengau for free.
From the beginning of July until early September, guided family tours of the Virgin Forest are offered in nice weather. During the walk, hikers big and small get to hear fascinating stories about these giant trees.
