Tip for Free Bathing Enjoyment
Bürgerausee in Kuchl
With this summer’s predicted hot temperatures, you can be certain everyone will be looking for somewhere to enjoy a refreshing dip in the water. The place I’ve discovered for us is the clear Bürgerausee in Kuchl. It’s located in the heart of the Salzach River Valley and easy to reach, not far from Salzburg City either – a real natural jewel in Tennengau. When I visited there with my 7-month-old son, I was able to snap a few photos for you. And now I’d like to describe some of my very positive impressions. And because the lake has so much to offer, I’ll begin with a list of the many highlights of a visit to this swimming lake in Kuchl.
When I look at that long list, I have to ask myself why I wasn’t here much earlier. There really is something here for EVERYBODY. Whether with your family, as a young adult, with your best friend or a whole group, everyone finds all the fun and relaxation they could wish for. Better still: It’s FREE!
On the south shore (entrance with a short-term parking zone, next to Kuchl middle school), two beautiful wading pools offer Kneipp-style therapy as well as the perfect opportunity to refresh your legs. Meanwhile, there is also a fountain where you can simply immerse your arms and cool down that way.
More and more families like to gather here with their small children, prompting many to refer to this area as the “baby pool” on Bürgerausee. We also made ourselves comfortable there with our kids, spreading ourselves out on a picnic blanket beneath shady trees.
Whether playing in the fountain or splashing about in the Kneipp pool, children simply have fun here, their parents able to watch them from the nearby wooden benches. But if you still want to cool off in the lake and swim a few “laps”, you are only a few steps from the lake via the rather humorously-named “therapy stairs”. Even the small pebbles are integrated into games. I was particularly fascinated by the little kids who dared to sit themselves down in the icy-cold fountain pond. Believe me, they made quite a face! Brrrrrr….definitely too cold for me, but they weren’t phased one bit – quite the contrary.
When you are ready to head home (from the south shore via the north shore), you will likely need to schedule in a little extra time. Either you will have to buy some ice cream at the kiosk, or the youngsters will want to explore the big playground. I recommend smearing the kids with sunblock and making them wear a cap, or simply wait until late afternoon, since most of the equipment is in direct sun. But otherwise, you will find everything kids could possibly wish for. Several swings, a sandbox with a digger, slides, climbing equipment, and much more …
Even though I – as someone who prefers baking in the sun – didn’t jump into the lake and am, therefore, unqualified to talk about the lake temperature, I do recommend this bathing spot to you. The Bürgerausee in Kuchl is definitely a special excursion tip for families. In fact, even to enjoy a stroll pushing a pram, this place is a big hit. And especially when the kids are a bit bigger and able to use the playground on their own. So, pack that bathing bag and head for Kuchl :-)
