Over the Postalm Scenic Road
and into a hiking paradise
Located just outside Abtenau in the Tennengau region of Salzburg lies a hiking area that couldn’t possibly be more idyllic: the Postalm, at 1304 meters above sea level. With an over 28.5 kilometers-long scenic road cutting right through it, the Postalm is one of this region’s top excursion destinations and simultaneously the biggest area of alpine pastures in all of Austria. Spanning 42 square kilometers in total, the Postalm is actually the second-largest uninterrupted expanse of alpine grazing areas in Europe.
Lush alpine meadows and fresh mountain air, inviting you to take a deep breath and enjoy. Traditional huts, 100 kilometers of hiking paths, including numerous full tours – perfect for an all-day outing with your whole family. In a protected landscape such as this, it has never been easier or more enjoyable to explore nature with your kids.
The drive on this scenic road through the idyllic alpine pastures between Lammertal and the Salzkammergut is rewarding in its own right. Not least because the most beautiful panorama imaginable and breathtaking landscapes lie there at your feet. During your drive, you will catch sight of the entire Dachstein massif, the Gosaukamm with its famous Bischofsmütze (the “Bishop’s Miter”), along with the Tennen- and Hagengebirge. You will even be able to see Lake Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut region.
In summer, numerous hiking paths invite you to spend carefree hours with your whole family. In the mood for a pleasant hiking loop? In that case, I’d suggest the Alpine Flower Path. 3 kilometers-long, it begins at Car Park 1 (path No. R4) close to restaurant Lienbachhof and the “Zur Blonden Hütte” inn. Nicely signposted and a pleasant walk for all ages, it also leads past a number of traditional huts and hill farms. At the beginning and end of this hiking loop, info boards teach you all about the rare alpine flowers found on the Postalm.
Actual walking time: about one hour – not including any refreshment breaks at huts along the way.
Tip: You will be able to collect a stamp for the Cleverix Stamp Rally at the toll both.
Summer or winter: The Postalmstrasse in the Tennengau is a top excursion destination for families and children throughout the year. Have you already visited the Postalm? In that case, you will be happy to hear that the Tennengau region boasts a grand total of 31 top excursion destinations that are just waiting to be discovered – in summer as well as in winter. Incidentally, you will find some really beautiful holiday snapshots posted on Instagram #visittennengau or @visittennengau.
