Pathways through the Natural Monument
Since 1884, the Lammeröfen have also been accessible to the general public. From the starting point in Oberscheffau, walkways lead along the rockfaces and high above the masses of water, providing young and old with a safe means to explore this fascinating gorge. Shortly after beginning your walk, you will come to the so-called “Dark Gorge”, probably the most beautiful section of the Lammerklamm. If you prefer, you can even navigate the gorge by water: Guided canoeing, rafting and tubing tours give you an unforgettable opportunity to experience the thunderous masses of water literally right under your own nose.
The history of the Lammerklamm
Even before the Ice Age, the River Lammer had already begun carving a narrow V-shaped valley into the mountain. Due to the melting glaciers thousands of years ago, powerful masses of water poured into the valley, carrying away the rock below it, one piece at a time – creating the imposing gorge we know today as the Lammerklamm.
The gorge is indeed an impressive example of the erosive power of water. It is assumed that people were already walking through the gorge in the Middle Ages. Back then, paths were created for the loggers to use as they guided tree trunks through the gorge. In 1884, a walkway was built to provide early tourists with a safe way to explore this wonder of nature.
