Tennengau AlmKäse: Pure enjoyment
The best of the GenussRegion
Cheese-making has a long tradition in Austria. In the Tennengau region of Salzburg especially, the locals have a special place in their hearts for delicious Almkäse cheese. The local cheese dairies mainly manufacture their dairy products with organic milk from hay-fed cattle.
That's one reason why the cheese has such a full flavor and tastes so good. Numerous local eateries and producers open their doors to interested guests, whether to purchase farm-direct products or even to roll up their sleeves and participate in the process. Our local producers are always delighted when you pay them a visit!
THE SECRET OF GOOD FLAVOR: ORGANIC HAY-MILK
When the animals are out grazing in Salzburg, they only ever eat the best food. Fresh and dried grasses, combined with alpine herbs, give the hay-milk its intensive flavor. Which is, in turn, the secret behind hearty Tennengau AlmKäse. Furthermore, this adds valuable vitamins and minerals to the hay-milk, since it is neither boiled nor pasteurized. Tennengau's cheese producers mainly use first-class hay-milk for their cheese creations.
TASTE FOR YOURSELF: AT THE TENNENGAU CHEESE DAIRIES
Not every cheese is the same! Precisely how diverse the selection of cheeses really is, is something you can experience at cheese dairies and mountain cheeseries in Tennengau. In fact, six different cheese producers invite you to stop by and sample their products. A great opportunity to taste cheese in all its marvelous variations. From mild cheese made from cows' milk, to full-flavored goat cheeses, you will find it all.

You can also look forward to some great treats at the Tennengau's Cheese Huts. Eight in total, high up on the hillsides and surrounded by the magical scenery of the Tennengau mountains, they promise yet another delectable experience. Their cheese selections are accompanied by homemade butter, bread and sausage. Motivation enough, we think you would agree, to set out on a hike to one of our cheese huts. Tennengau AlmKäse is marvelous in its own right. But add to that a shot of fine schnapps or a spoonful of homemade chutney, and the experience is taken to a whole new height.
