In many towns, local heritage groups gather on May 1st for the ceremonial raising of a maypole, a symbol of fertility and a love for life. But even weeks before May 1st, the search for the perfect tree begins. On the night before the big day, it is carefully guarded by young lads from the village, in order to ward off any attempts to steal it by neighboring communities - this is the night when tradition allows for the maypole to be stolen! And sometimes it can get even worse, especially if it happens to get carved up or even sawn into pieces!
Once the maypole has been raised, it is time for a competition to see who can race fastest to the top. Hanging there as rewards: sausage, small gifts and even money! This competition demands a lot of strength from competitors - if you have a fear of heights, this is definitely not for you!
