Oberalmer Marterlweg

Wiestal Chapel

The Marterlweg in Oberalm (Tennengau Hiking Map: Trail No. 46) follows an already existing and very popular hiking path towards Wiestal, leading past many wayside crosses -  known in this part of the world as "Marterl" -and small chapels. All of these lovingly maintained cultural monuments stand in special places, each with its own tale to tell, generally an expression of thanks, or of a tragedy within a family.

Starting point is the Café Lohmaier, located on the Halleiner Landstrasse and easily reached either by bus (No. 160, Haunsperg stop) or car. At this point we go from the "Holy Cross" via the Bartwirtstrasse and the Pröllhof-strasse to the "Jellkreuz", continuing along the Raiffeisen-strasse and Kirchenstrasse to the "Christopherus Altar". Then we briefly head back the same way, turn left beneath the autobahn, making our way to the Almerbergweg and the "Hellabründl Cross", from where we go to the Wiestalstrasse and the altar located at the "Herberg-Einfang" and continue to the Wiestal Chapel, which is consecrated to St. Sebastian. Passing the Gasthaus Bischof (refreshments available), we now make our way to the "Rauscher Cross", then turn right and walk down the Wiesenweg to the "Stoandl Chapel". The route now takes us down the "Stoandlgraben" to the shores of the Almbachsee, where we take a right to the "Neuhaus Cross" and then head up to the "Wiestal Chapel". At this point, the trail takes us via the Wiestalstrasse towards Oberalm, or steeply uphill to the right on the "Reichenweg", bringing us up over the "Oberalmerberg" and back to the center of town.

Walk Time: about 3 hours
